School Dropout Among Primary School Students: The Case of Cavo Primary School (1st and 2nd Level), Rapale District (2019/2020)
Abstract
School dropout is a recurring
problem at Cavo Primary School (1st and 2nd Level) and in Mozambique in
general. This study aimed to analyze the impact of school dropout on both the
school and the Cavo community. Methodologically, a case study with a
qualitative approach was adopted. Semi-structured interviews and document
analysis were conducted, involving four parents and/or guardians, three
students who dropped out of school, and three teachers. The results revealed
that the majority of the surrounding school community is illiterate, which
perpetuates the cycle of educational exclusion. Furthermore, school dropout leads
to a waste of government and family investments, a progressive reduction in the
number of students, an increase in early marriages, and the exposure of
children and adolescents to informal trade in local markets, putting their
safety and the environment at risk. This study contributes to the understanding
of the factors associated with school dropout and reinforces the need for more
effective educational policies to mitigate this phenomenon.
