Perception of the School Community on the Factors of School Dropout at Unidade Moçambique Primary School – Mecuburi, Nampula, 2021–2023
Abstract
School dropout is a widely
debated social phenomenon around the world. In Mozambique, this issue is seen
as one of the major obstacles to fulfilling the Education for All Agenda by
2030. Its relevance lies in the fact that school dropout significantly
contributes to the perpetuation of social, political, and economic
inequalities. Recognizing that it is a complex phenomenon subject to multiple
interpretations, this study aims to understand the perception of the school
community at Unidade Moçambique Primary School regarding the factors that drive
student dropout. This qualitative research used semi-structured interviews with
teachers, students, and parents or guardians to collect data on the causes of
dropout, the profile of students who leave school, and possible strategies to
reduce this phenomenon. The results indicate that parents’ financial inability
to support their children’s education, the distance to school, and the lack of
effective institutional intervention strategies are key factors contributing to
the persistence of school dropout in the institution analyzed.
